ESL Acronyms for Canadian Teachers


ACTJ – Association of Canadian Teachers in Japan

ACTJ – Association of Canadian Teachers in Japan.

ALM – Audio-Lingual method of teaching English. 

ATESL - Alberta Teachers of English as a Second Language – professional association for ESL teachers. 

B.Ed – Bachelor of Education degree.

BC TEAL – British Columbia association for ESL teachers. 

CALL - Computer Assisted Language Learning

CEELT – Cambridge Examination in English for Language Teachers. 

CELTA - Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults – Cambridge University’s certificate program, formerly the CTEFLA.

CELTYL - Certificate in English Language Teaching to Young Learners – Cambridge’s certificate program for teaching children. 

CUSO – formerly Canadian University Service Overseas, the organization still helps to place Canadians in volunteer positions abroad in addition to funding programs in other countries. 

CV – curriculum vitae – interchangeably used with more common Canadian term “resume.”

DOS/DoS – Director of Studies – Head teacher/administrator responsible for staff.

DELTA - Diploma English Language Teaching to Adults - Cambridge (see UCLES) advanced in-service qualification formerly DTEFLA
Dip. - Diploma - Usually refers to a post experience, or in-service teaching qualification. 
EAP - English for Academic Purposes - Learning/teaching English to enable further academic study in any discipline.  Often associated with TOEFL preparation. 
EFL - English as a Foreign Language – refers to the English studied and used by non-native speakers in non-English speaking countries (as opposed to ESL which is defined below). 
ELT - English Language Teaching/Training - General term covering TEFL, TESOL and TESL. 

EPIK – English Program in Korea.  Ministry of Education sponsored placement program.

EMT – English Mother Tongue.  Sometimes used to designate teachers as native speakers. 

EOP – English for Occupational Purposes.  Sub-category of ESP.

EPP – English for Professional Purposes.  Sub-category of ESP. 
ESL - English as a Second language – refers to the English spoken by people whose native language is not English while they are living or studying in an English-speaking host country like
Canada. 
ESOL - English for Speakers of Other Languages - Another general term for the field of EFL/ESL, possibly set to become the standard.
ESP - English for Special/Specific Purposes - Teaching learners who need to use a specific vocabulary in their work (aircrew, engineers, electronic engineers, software developers) but will not need to use English otherwise. This term is also applied to business English learning and academic English learning (EAP)
EYL - English for Young Learners - This term relates to language teaching for young people aged between 7-12 years

HRDC – Human Resources Development Canada – Teacher training programs should be registered with HRDC as education institutions and qualify for tax deductibility on tuition. 
IATEFL - International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language is a British based teachers association, like TESOL Inc. in
America.
IELTS – the British equivalent of American’s TOEFL – a test to determine preparedness of international students seeking to study in the
United Kingdom.

JET – The Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme.  Ministry of Education sponsored placement program.

L1 – Learner’s first language

L2 – Learner’s second language (English is often L2 for students but can be L3 or more depending on how many other languages they speak.)
LTCL (TESOL) - Licentiate of
Trinity College London in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

NET – Native English-speaking Teacher scheme.  Hong Kong Ministry of Education placement program.

NNS – Non-native speaker.

NS – Native speaker.

NR73 – Determination of Residency form Canadian teachers abroad need to submit to the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency. 

PGCE – Post Graduate Certificate in Education – equivalent of Canadian B.Ed

PPSEC – Private Post-Secondary Education Commission – British Columbia regulatory agency that oversees private training companies.  Teacher training programs must be registered with the PPSEC to offer courses in B.C..

PPP – Presentation, Practice, Production (teaching methodology).
RSA Certificate and Diploma - Royal Society of Arts qualification (no longer offered but still sometimes requested). Forerunner to CELTA and DELTA.

SCENES – Saskatchewan Council of Educators of Non-English Speakers.   Professional association for ESL teachers. 

STT – Student Talking Time

TEAL – Teaching English as an Additional Language
TEAP - Teaching English for Academic Purposes
TEFL - Teaching English as a Foreign Language – as taught to learners in countries where English is not a native language.
TESL - Teaching English as a Second Language – as taught to learners in countries where English is a native language (eg. English to immigrants in

Canada).
TESP - Teaching English for Specific Purposes

TESS – Teacher of English to Speakers of Spanish
TEYL -Teaching English for Young Learners
TESOL - Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages – The catch-all term

for teaching English that includes TEFL and TESL.   Also the name of the American membership organization (TESOL Inc.) for ESL/EFL teachers.

TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language. Exam used to gauge level of English competence for international students seeking admission to universities in Canada, United States and a growing number of other countries.

TOEIC – Test of English for International Communication.  An oral proficiency exam used to gauge communicative competency.  

TTT – Teacher Talking Time.

TWE – Test of Written English.

UCLES - University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate - department of Cambridge University responsible for overseeing CELTA and DELTA.

VSO – Voluntary Service Overseas (Canadian placement service)

WUSC – World University Services Canada (volunteer teaching placements)
